Macon, Illinois is a small Macon County city with approximately 1,200 residents. This village consists of 1.43 square miles of total area, all of which is land, and U.S. Highway 51 runs through the area. Macon is part of the Decatur Metro Statistical Area, with the City of Decatur conveniently located about 10 miles to the north. Additionally, Macon is only about two hours from St. Louis and a three hour drive to Chicago.

Despite the small size of Macon, there are a few notable attractions and businesses located in the area. The primary attraction in Macon is the Macon County Speedway, which is owned by NASCAR stars and is open for racing every Saturday evening from April to September. Residents that want to go out for dinner without traveling too far from home may like to visit Whit’s End, and the local Dollar General provides them with affordable necessities and home goods.

If you live in or have plans to relocate to the Macon area, you’ll need to know what to expect in regards to the weather so that you can plan ahead. Winter conditions are cold, and storms with snow, sleet, and ice are common. When freezing temperatures are also added to the equation – which almost always occur overnight during the height of the winter – conditions can become quite dangerous. A reliable home furnace system will keep your family warn regardless of frigid outdoor temperatures.

Summer weather in Macon can also be dangerous for other reasons. Temperatures are hot and humid, and during the hottest month of July, average daily highs reach about 87 degrees Fahrenheit. Given Macon’s location within Tornado Alley, severe storms can also occur during the summer months, and when conditions are dangerous outdoors, residents will rely on their central air conditioning systems to stay safe and comfortable.
